Arabesque
The arabesque is one the most characteristic motifs of Islamic art. This term is used to describe an artistic decoration based on rhythmic linear patterns of scrolling and interlacing foliage, tendrils or plain lines, that are often combined with other elements. Plant motifs are very old as some cases of it are seen in the art of the Hellenistic period (Greek art) and in Anatolia which proves these patterns date further back than Islamic Art. The specific patterns of arabesque seen in the early eleventh century rapidly evolved; despite the simplicity or complexity, the pattern was always symmetrical and usually abstract and diagrammatical.
